Upsetting news...

There was a mass shooting at Northern Illinois University, the university I used to go to. Five dead and 22 wounded, although they keep changing the numbers, so who knows what the final tally will be.

I got my teaching certificate at NIU and M got his Ph.D. We both lived in the community for about six years and both of us had at least one class in that hall. Yeah, upsetting indeed.

Those mass shootings must be beyond terrifying, especially as they are totally unexpected. It is bad enough for those who have loved ones who are killed ... but also for those who are left alive, the trauma they must experience in the aftermath

Yes, exactly! I feel so shaken because M taught in that lecture hall when he was teaching there and I had a class in there once. It's just...so disturbing to see the familiar landmarks on the news under those circumstances. Violence of any form in any place is hideous, but somehow it hits really close to home when it's somewhere where you could have been or were at one time...

Oh no that's horrible, I hate it when those things happen it makes absolutely no sense at all and its even worse when after the fact they realise that yes that person was presenting signs all along and noone picked up on it or did anything.

I can't even begin to imagine how the families must feel, much less for friends.

Now they're saying 7 dead and possibly more to come because several still in critical condition...Like I said to Elspeth all violence is awful and senseless, but on a selfish level, it's even worse when it's a place you were a part of, a community you were a part of, and yeah -- what a horrid nightmare for the families and friends (just the kind of thing you were talking about yesterday)...I just feel chilled today.
