feeling better today
I'm a dork -- switched out my picture.
A few people have asked to hear the story about the robbery and I will actually get to that in time. Right now it still makes me a little shaky to go through it in detail. And honestly I probably won't put all the details here in a public forum. All the same, Mitra was good enough to compile a list of tips for travelers to Tobago but I think this list could apply to anyone traveling anywhere. I hope this list could help keep people aware and safe. These are general tips, by the way, not necessarily details in our situation.
1. If possible, travel with a group, with both men and women
2. Don't wear loud jewelry or expensive clothes
3. When you reach the guest house/hotel, go through with the manager and check all the doors and windows, asking if they are burglar-proof
4. Check how secluded the place is, i.e. are there other people in the area, and if it is air conditioned or right on the ocean, would it be possible for a neighbor to hear loud or suspicious noises or screams
5. Keep a phone and valuables in a hidden place, so a robber would not find them
6. If a man is trying to rape you, look him in the eye, remain calm, and reason with him that you are a human being and that you have a family, and that he is probably just in a tough place where he needs money, but he can just leave without harming anyone
7. Be careful, and if you see anything suspicious (a man on the beach looking at guest houses, for example) report it immediately! Better safe than sorry.

Wise tips, largely for indoors. I would also add for the outdoors, to be careful when sitting on beaches and in open public areas and crowded public areas. If you have a bag, hold it in a way that it is not easy for anyone to grab. Do not leave your laptop (if you have one) unattended in public. Develop eyes in the back of your head and be as self aware as possible. If you take a common route (driving or walking) try and alter it a bit every now and then. When going out, let someone know where you are going. Have the phone numbers of one or two people to call, in case of emergency (on your person if possible). Envision the huge Guardian angel that goes everywhere with you at all times. If ever anyone comes near you with adverse intentions, your Angel gives him/her a big THWAK an sends them running. And, despite all the tips and the fact that things may not be as 'safe' as they used to be, do not be paranoid. Continue to enjoy life. The criminals are the minority.
Good advice. Old Knudsen advocates torturing rapists to a slow death. I agree. Even that's too good for them.
